Culture Desk: Black and White

By Fred Noland, THE NEW YORKER
March 7, 2021
The title card shows a blackandwhite television set and its parts. The illustrator's mom buys a blackandwhite TV set from the store.A man on CBS news says And that's the way it is...A kid plays with the knobs on the TV to find interference in the middle of the night.A neighborhood annotated in all the ways it was blackandwhite itself. All the very white TV shows and characters that appeared on the TV.And the caricatureheavy Black shows that appeared. And absurdist shows like The Jeffersons. And the corny Cosby Show with the characters' enviable problems. And the more fun weekend shows like Scooby Doo.The author now older describes more modern Black shows which he can't watch on his old blackandwhite TV.
